A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone where a tooth used to be. Once it heals and bonds with the bone, it holds a crown, a bridge or a denture firmly in place.
Because an implant works like a tooth root, it also helps keep the jawbone from shrinking, which is something bridges and regular dentures cannot do.
Dr. Patel will look at your X-rays, check your bone and gum health, and talk through every option with you, including cost and timing, before anything gets started.
We offer three main ways to use implants, depending on how many teeth you need to replace.
One implant and one crown replace one missing tooth. Nearby teeth are left untouched.
Two implants can support a bridge that replaces three or more teeth in a row, without relying on natural teeth.
A denture that clicks onto a few implants. No more slipping, and you can bite into foods you have been avoiding.
Most healthy adults who are missing teeth can get implants. Good candidates have healthy gums, enough jawbone (or are willing to have a graft), and are committed to brushing, flossing and regular checkups. Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes can slow healing, so we will talk about those openly if they apply to you.
Implants usually cost more up front, but they do not involve neighboring teeth and they can last a very long time with good care. Bridges are quicker. Dentures are the most budget-friendly way to replace many teeth. There is no single right answer, and Dr. Patel will help you weigh it all. No dental insurance? The implant post itself can last for decades and often a lifetime with good care. The crown on top may need replacing after 10 to 15 years from normal wear.
Implant placement is done with local anesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Most patients describe mild soreness for a few days afterward.
From placement to the final crown, it usually takes a few months to allow the bone to heal around the implant. If you need a bone graft first, add a few more months.
Some dental plans cover part of implant treatment and others do not. We will check your benefits and give you a written estimate before anything starts. No insurance? Ask about our in-house membership plan.
Most patients need more than one kind of care over the years. Here is where to go next.
